Scope creep kills MVPs.
Not slowly—dramatically. A project that started at "8 weeks, $12K" drifts into "16 weeks, $30K" without anyone noticing the moment it happened. Features sneak in. Integrations multiply. The definition of "done" keeps moving.
Most founders assume this is inevitable.
It isn't.
The reason most agencies let it happen: scope creep is revenue. The longer the project, the more they bill. Misalignment is profitable.
We do it differently at BeeMVP. Here's the 5-step process that keeps scope fixed, timelines predictable, and founders in control.
Step 1: Discover (Weeks 1–2)
This isn't a sales call. This is a research phase where we learn three things:
- What problem are you solving?
- Who's the user living in that problem?
- What success looks like for them (and you)?
We do this through a mix of:
- User interviews (we talk to 3–5 target users, not just you)
- Workflow mapping (sketching how users do today vs. how they should do)
- Metrics definition (what does traction look like? 10 customers? 100K revenue? Usage patterns?)
Outcome: A discovery brief (3–5 pages). Not a spec. Not a design. A shared understanding of the problem space.
Why this matters: If you skip this, you're building on assumptions. Assumptions shift. Scope creeps.
Red flag: If you want to "just start building" in week 1, we pause and do this anyway. It saves rework later.
Step 2: Scope (Weeks 2–3)
Now we define what goes IN the MVP and—more importantly—what stays OUT.
We run a scope workshop:
- List every possible feature (brainstorm, no judgment)
- Map features to workflows (which feature serves which user workflow?)
- Classify each feature: Tier 1 (essential), Tier 2 (nice-to-have), Tier 3 (post-launch)
- Draw the line: "This is the MVP. Everything below the line ships in V1.1 or later."
Example scope for a lead-gen SaaS:
- Tier 1 (MVP): Create lead, view lead, basic filtering, email notification
- Tier 2 (V1.1): Lead assignment, custom fields, bulk import
- Tier 3 (Future): AI lead scoring, predictive analytics, Slack integration
The scope document is a contract. It has:
- Workflows included (Tier 1 only)
- Workflows explicitly excluded (Tier 2–3)
- Integrations (3 max; we're specific about which 3)
- Design depth (thin or full; we define what "thin" means)
- Infrastructure requirements (do we need real-time? Do we need multi-tenancy?)
Outcome: A signed scope document (5–10 pages). Both parties agree. Changes require change orders.
Why this matters: This is when disagreement happens—openly. Not 8 weeks in, when you realize we were building different things.
Red flag: If stakeholders can't agree on what's in vs. out, we don't proceed to Build. We workshop until alignment.
Step 3: Build (Weeks 4–10, depending on complexity)
Now we code.
During Build, we protect scope through three mechanisms:
Weekly Demos
Every Friday, you see a demo of what shipped that week. 15 minutes, raw app (not polished), focused on Tier 1 workflows. You can give feedback on UI/UX, but not on feature scope—that's locked.
Why this works: Visibility kills surprises. If we're drifting, you see it before week 8.
Change Orders for New Requests
If you ask for something out of scope, we don't say "no." We say "yes, and here's the change order."
- Change order for a new integration: +$2K, +1 week
- Change order for a new Tier 2 feature: +$3K–$5K, +1–2 weeks
This is explicit. You see the cost. Most requests disappear when they have a price tag.
Daily Standup (Async)
Engineering posts a 5-minute update every morning: what shipped, what's next, any blockers. You read it. No meetings. Transparency without calendar overhead.
Outcome: Shipping on time, to scope, with working software.
Why this matters: Builds get chaotic without discipline. Weekly demos + change orders + async standups are how we maintain discipline.
Red flag: If you feel like you're "in the dark" about progress, that's a process failure. We fix that immediately.
Step 4: Review (Weeks 10–12)
Before launch, we do a structured review:
1. Workflow UAT (User Acceptance Testing)
We bring in 2–3 real users from your target audience. They try the app cold, with no guidance. Do they understand it? Can they complete the Tier 1 workflows? Where do they get stuck?
2. Performance Audit
LCP < 2.0s? INP < 200ms? CLS < 0.1? We measure. If we miss targets, we optimize.
3. Security Audit
Auth works correctly? Data is encrypted in transit & at rest? OWASP top 10 covered? Database doesn't expose secrets?
4. Accessibility Audit
Does it work with a keyboard? Can a screen reader navigate it? Color contrast WCAG AA?
5. Browser & Device Testing
Does it work on Chrome, Firefox, Safari? Desktop, tablet, mobile?
Outcome: A review report (5–10 pages) listing bugs, blockers, and recommendations. We fix P0 bugs before launch. P1 bugs go to a post-launch hotfix list.
Why this matters: You don't want to discover bugs on launch day via your users. We find them first.
Red flag: If UAT shows that users can't complete your core workflow, we pause. Back to Build.
Step 5: Launch (Week 12+)
Launch is not a single event—it's a process:
Day 1: Soft Launch (Invite-only)
You, your team, and trusted early users. We're watching: Are there runtime errors? Is the database stable? Do notifications work? We fix critical issues within 24 hours.
Day 3: Beta Launch (Public with caveats)
You announce to your waitlist / target audience: "Hey, we're live in beta. Known limitations include [list]. We'd love feedback."
This gives cover for inevitable bugs and UX surprises.
Day 7: GA (General Availability)
Public launch. No more "beta" qualifier. You're live.
During the first month, we do:
- Hotfix duty (we respond to P0 bugs within 24 hours)
- Analytics setup (events are tagged, dashboards live)
- Performance monitoring (Sentry / error tracking active)
- User feedback synthesis (we read early reviews, spot patterns)
Outcome: A live app with real users, real feedback, real traction signals.
Why this matters: Launch isn't the finish line. It's the beginning. We stay present for the first month to catch fire.
Why Scope Creep Happens (And How We Stop It)
Scope creep happens for four reasons:
1. Vague Initial Scope
If the scope document is written in prose and open to interpretation, it will drift. We solve this with explicit feature lists, workflow diagrams, and integration specs. Vagueness is our enemy.
2. Moving Success Definition
If you shipped a lead capture form, but then realize "oh, we also need analytics to measure success," that's a new workflow. New workflows = change order. We make this explicit.
3. "Just One More Thing" Syndrome
You see the demo on Friday and think, "While we're at it, can we add custom fields?" Yes, but change order. Saying "yes" but with a price tag kills casual additions.
4. Misaligned Timelines
If you expected 4 weeks but agreed to a 10-week project, scope tends to expand to fill the time. We avoid this by front-loading scope work and locking timelines early.
Practical Tips for Founders to Prevent Scope Creep
If you're running an MVP build with any team (not just us):
Write a Scope Document
Before code is written, document what's in. What features. What integrations. What's explicitly out. Sign it. Refer back to it.
Define "Done" per Workflow
"Done" isn't "feature exists." It's "user can complete workflow end-to-end without help." This is the done definition for each Tier 1 workflow.
Track Requests, Don't Dismiss Them
When you ask for something new, write it down. "Oh, we also need email notifications?" → Add to Tier 2 list. Don't let it disappear.
Weekly Demos Are Non-Negotiable
If your team isn't showing you working software every week, that's a red flag. Visibility beats surprise.
Understand Change Orders
Every new request has a cost in time, money, or both. Good teams make this explicit. Sketchy teams hide it and overrun.
Protect the Core Workflow
If the team is about to add a 5th integration and it'll push launch by 2 weeks, you need to say "no, that's V1.1." This is on you.
Escalate Misalignment Early
If you realize the team is building feature X, but you wanted feature Y, don't wait 8 weeks. Raise it in weekly demo. Rework early is cheap. Rework late is expensive.

Is every project 12 weeks? No. Simpler MVPs (1–2 workflows, thin design) compress to 8 weeks. More complex ones (4+ workflows, full design, 3+ integrations) extend to 14–16 weeks. But the process scales.
The Contract It Creates
This 5-step process creates a social contract between you and the team:
You commit to: Making scope decisions upfront, not changing your mind about priorities mid-build, doing UAT seriously, and accepting that "quick pivots" require change orders.
We commit to: Delivering on scope, on timeline, with quality. Weekly visibility. Explicit change orders. One month of post-launch support.
When both sides honor this contract, scope creep disappears.
